About 30 per cent of the readymade garment (RMG) factories, which started disbursing workers' wages through mobile financial service provider bKash, are returning to traditional cash disbursement system despite higher benefits attached to the digital payment method.
About 1.1 million workers from 980 garment factories received their wages through bKash accounts during the Covid-19 pandemic after the government announced a Tk 50 billion stimulus package for paying garment workers' salaries, said Mizanur Rashid, chief commercial officer of bKash.
"Despite higher benefits of digital wage disbursement, many have returned to previous method of cash disbursement. At present, some 0.75 million workers are receiving their wages through bKash," he said.
Only 0.4 million workers used to receive their wages through bKash accounts before the Covid-19 pandemic, he said, claiming that bKash had played an important role in disbursing wages during the pandemic.
