Around 28.40 per cent of people in Bangladesh are covered by at least one social protection benefit which is much lower than the average rate in Asia and the Pacific.

Bangladesh is, however, well above India in this regard where only 19.0 per cent of the population are under such coverage.

United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) unveiled the data in its annual flagship publication titled ‘Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2018.’

The report, released recently in Bangkok, showed that on average in Asia and the Pacific region some 38.90 per cent of people are now getting social protection benefit.

Australia provides maximum social protection coverage with some 82 per cent of its citizens enjoying at least one benefit under it, followed by 75.40 per cent in Japan and 72.40 per cent in Mongolia.
