The government is considering 10 per cent cash incentive to local information technology (IT) service exporters in a bid to facilitate the sector to grow further.

Post, Telecom and Information Technology Minister Mustafa Jabbar said this at the opening ceremony of Tab and Smartphone Expo-2018 at Agargaon on Thursday.

Jabbar inaugurated the event as chief guest while the ICT State Minister Junaid Ahmed Palak was present as special guest.

He also said a ‘tax holiday’ facility is under consideration for those who are seeking to set up IT industries in the government-announced High-tech Park zones.

During the opening ceremony of the three-day event, the minister invited foreign IT brands to invest in Bangladesh saying the country has become an investment friendly one.

Moreover, the government will come up with a value added service guideline for the sector, he added.

State minister for ICT Palak said internet could be a strong medium to provide proper education.

Government services are needed to be translated into e-governance to engage more people to use internet, tabs, smartphones and other modern devices, he added.

The junior minister also said utility payment system would be digitalised soon.

On top of that, Palak invited local IT service providers to take advantage of the government’s mobile market initiative.

The total cost of the initiative is Tk 150 million.

Both the minister and state minister asked global brands to come in Bangladesh to manufacture smart devices locally so the tag can say ‘made in Bangladesh’.

Event organiser Expo Maker’s Strategic Planner Muhammad Khan presided over the event. Representatives of different smartphone and tab brands also addressed the event, among others.

The expo will remain open for public from 10:00am to 8:00pm.
