Stocks witness positive, turnover remains low

Stocks opened on a positive note on Thursday as bargain hunters showed their appetite on sector-wise issues.

Following the previous day’s marginal gain, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) opened on an upward trend with low trading activities.

After the first hour of trading, DSEX, the key index of the DSE, advanced more than 45 points while the CSE All Share Price Index (CASPI) of port city’s bourse gained 69 points at 11:00 when the report was filed.

DSEX, the prime index of the DSE, went up by 45.22 points or 0.81 per cent to stand 5,627 points till then.

Two other indices also saw positive trend till then. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips gained 23.70 points to reach 2,160 points and the Shariah Index (DSES) rose 4.88 points to stand 1,255 points till then.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 1.85 billion within the first hour of trading at 11:00 am.

Market analysts said the bargain hunters kept their buying spree on sector-wise stocks which saw sharp correction in recent index fall.

Newly listed companies continued to suffer losses as the securities regulator has formed a two-member committee on Wednesday to probe into the role of market operators behind the unusual price hike of shares of the newly-listed companies, observed in their initial trading sessions.

Of the issues traded till then, 153 advanced, 50 declined and 90 remained unchanged.

Beximco was the most traded stock till then with shares worth Tk 266 million changing hands, followed by ROBI, BABC, LankaBangla Finance, and Energypac Power.

The port city bourse – the Chittagong Stock Exchange – (CSE) also saw an upward trend till then with CSE All Share Price Index- CASPI- gaining 69 points to stand at 16,235, also at 11:00 am.

Of the issues traded till then, 37 gained, 41 declined, and 18 issues remained unchanged with Tk 97 million in turnover.
