Stocks jump at opening amid rising turnover

Stocks witnessed an upbeat note on the opening day of the week on Sunday amid rising trading activities as enthusiastic investors continued their buying binge on sector sector-wise issues amid high expectations.

Following last week’s high note, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) opened higher amid soaring turnover value.

Within the first 30 minutes of trading, the DSEX advanced more than 57 points while the CSE All Share Price Index (CASPI) of the port city’s bourse rose 112 points at 10:30am when the report was filed.

DSEX, the prime index of the DSE, went up by 57.10 points or 1.13 per cent to reach 5,068 points at 10:30am.

The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, gained 18 points to reach at 1,758 and the Shariah Index (DSES) advanced 12 points to reach 1,170 points till then.

Turnover, the important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 2.35 billion when the report was filed at 10:30am which was Tk 1.63 billion in the previous day at 10:30am.

Market operators said active participation of the high net worth individuals due to lower returns on the money market and gradual improvement of economic activities prompted the investors to inject fresh funds into the market.

The stock market regulator continued with its tough stance on gamblers and came up with a number of conditions for junk stocks and slapped several companies with big fines as part of its efforts to go tough on the wrongdoers which helped to build investors’ confidence.

Of the issues traded till then, 275 advanced, 33 declined, and 34 remained unchanged.

Orion Infusions was the most traded stocks till then with shares worth Tk 117 million changing hands, closely followed by Provati Insurance, Beximco Pharma, Orion Pharma and National Polymer.

The port city bourse – the Chittagong Stock Exchange – (CSE) also saw an upbeat trend till then with CSE All Share Price Index- CASPI-soaring 112 points to stand at 14,407, also at 10:30am.

Of the issues traded till then, 115 gained, 12 declined, and 17 issues remained unchanged with Tk 55 million in turnover.
