Stocks end flat as large-cap stocks plunge

Stocks ended almost flat on Thursday as investors selling some large-cap stocks in later part of the session.

Analysts said the some investors sold shares especially large-cap Grameenphone, Square Pharmaceuticals, ACI BSRM, MJL Bangladesh and Singer Bangladesh to cash in ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

The market started on positive note and the key index rose about 30 points within first hour of trading. But, rest of the session eroded almost all the early gains.

At the end of the session, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) settled at 5,407, advancing only 1.05 points over the previous day.

However, two other indices ended lower. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, fell sharply by nearly 12 points and the DSE Shariah Index lost 5.86 points to close at 1,245.

Turnover, an important indicator of the market, also fell slightly as the total turnover stood at Tk 7.04 billion, which was 2.76 per cent lower than the previous day’s Tk 7.24 billion.

Of the 338 issues traded on the DSE trading floor, 170 declined, 133 advanced and 35 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

A total number of 152461 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 196.48 million securities.

The market capitalisation of the DSE stood at Tk 3,845 billion on the day which was Tk 3,858 billion in the previous session.

BBS Cables dominated the turnover chart with 3.64 million shares worth Tk 420 million changing hands, followed by United Power, Saiham Textile, Aman Cotton Fibrous and Paramount Textile.

Intech was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 9.96 per cent while Shympur Sugar Mills was the worst performer, losing 9.93 per cent.

The port city bourse CSE closed slightly higher with its CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI –advancing 22 points to settle at 16,630 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX – gaining 15 points to finish at 10,068.

The losers beat gainers 114 issues closed lower, 109 ended higher, with 33 issues remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city bourse traded 12.10 million shares and mutual fund units worth more than Tk 401 million in turnover.
