DSEX dips below 5000-mark again

The key index of the major bourse slumped below the ‘psychological’ threshold of 5,000-mark again on Wednesday as investors continued to dump their holdings to escape further loss.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, lost 20.68 points or 0.41 per cent to settle 4,986, which is the six weeks low. DSEX also plunged below 5,000-mark on July 22 this year.

Market analysts said lack of investors’ confidence, telecom regulator’s strict stance towards Grameenphone (GP), soaring non-performing loans coupled with falling foreign portfolio investment triggered further fall of index.

Two other indices also ended lower. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, fell 10.70 points to finish at 1,748 and the DSE Shariah Index lost 8.35 points to close at Tk 1,158.

Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, also fell to Tk 3.75 billion, which was 5.0 per cent lower than the previous day’s Tk 3.95 billion.

A total number of 119,432 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 91.81 million shares and mutual fund units.

The market-cap of the DSE also fell to Tk 3,724 billion on Wednesday, from Tk 3,743 billion in the previous session.

Losers took a modest lead over the gainers as out of 351 issues traded, 166 closed lower, 132 ended higher and 53 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Monno Ceramic Industries topped the turnover chart for the third straight session with shares worth nearly Tk 200 million changing hands, followed by Stylecraft, Renata, Monno Jute Stafflers and United Power.

Sea Pearl Beach Resorts was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 9.81 per cent while “Reliance One” the first scheme of Reliance Insurance Mutual Fund was the day’s worst loser, plunging by 9.27 per cent.

The port city’s bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange, also closed lower with its All Shares Price Index (CAPSI) -- CASPI-- losing 88 points to close at 15,213 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX – shedding 54 points to finish at 9,235.

Here too, losers beat the gainers as 129 issues closed lower, 89 higher and 33 remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city bourse traded 5.32 million shares and mutual fund units worth nearly Tk 162 million in turnover.
