Stocks extended their winning streak on Sunday, with turnover crossing Tk 21 billion-mark after 11 months, as the buoyant investors put fresh funds on major sector shares amid growing confidence.

Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, stood at Tk 21.05 billion on the country’s premier bourse, climbing further by 18 per cent over previous day’s mark of Tk 17.77 billion.

It was the biggest single-day transaction since October 7, 2021, when the turnover totaled a record Tk 24.97 billion.

Along with increasing turnover, DSEX, the prime index of the DSE, went up by 46.73 points or 0.73 per cent to finish at 6,401, the highest in two months.

The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, also advanced 3.66 points to finish at 2,271. However, the DSE Shariah index saw a fractional loss of 0.20 points to close at 1,390.

Market operators said stocks remained afloat as the investors put fresh bets on major sector stocks amid growing confidence in the market.

Gradual stability of the exchange rate through different measures taken by the central bank along with discussion regarding import of fuel from Russia boosted the investors’ sentiment, said a merchant banker.

Bangladesh Bank’s efforts to curb the dollar price volatility along with the government’s announcement to adjust the fuel price in line with the global markets gave a relief to the investors, he said.

Orion pharma became the most-traded stock with shares worth Tk 1.14 billion changing hands, closely followed by Beximco, fortune shoes, metro spinning mills and Delta Life Insurance.
