BCB identifies 77 gamblers

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has identified 77 suspected gamblers, including 12 foreigners, from stadiums since beginning of Bangladesh Premier League on November 4 this year.

BPL Governing Council Member Secretary Muhammed Ismail Haider Mallick revealed the information at a news conference in Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Friday.

Mallick, a BCB director and vice chairman of logistics and protocol committee, said the board's anti-graft and security personnel work at the stadiums during the matches.

They act if something happens in the stadiums and at the premises, he said.

"Around 65 Bangladeshis were found betting on mobile phones. We have only identified and investigated them as we cannot start cases," he said.

"Twelve foreigners, including 10 Indians, were also identified."

"They may come to the stadiums to bet on mobile phones as it takes up to nine seconds to air the live video in TV," he said.

According to bdnews24.com, the BCB official spoke about their helplessness in such incidents due to a lack of relevant law to prosecute the gamblers.

"We only drive them out," he said, adding that the authorities have nothing more to do than to increase the watch to stop betting in the stadiums.
