Makeup can damage your skin if not used properly

Makeup enhances our beauty and confidence. We often use makeup for any occasion or day-to-day life. Proper dealing with makeup is essential as makeup can result in many skin problems.

If we do not clean the makeup properly before going to sleep at night, it can block our pores on the skin. Keeping makeup on for a long time can cause much pressure and stress on our skin.

Many products are available in the market for cleaning makeup. Appropriately cleaning makeup can keep your skin healthier. However, you can still face skin issues after cleaning your makeup.

A renowned dermatologist of The Derm Institute in Redondo beach, California,  Dr Annie Chiu, M.D. shared in her popular vlog, ''Washing your makeup off every night is important. Skipping even a single night can cause your skin to age prematurely for various reasons.”

“First, environmental pollutants can stick to the makeup causing oxidative stress. Pollutants can damage the cellular structure of your skin and may even cause a decrease in the production of collagen which is the substance that keeps your skin full and plump.”

Makeup also forms a barrier over the skin which ends up in irritants and locking out moisturisers. This exacerbates redness, irritation, an increase in pore size, and infant wrinkles. All those things make our skin appear older.

Dermatologists also warn that the cosmetics which help us to look beautiful contain many harmful ingredients and lead to some side effects in the long term.

Lipsticks lower the moisture of the lips and contain lead and mineral oils. Not only lipsticks, eyelashes, mascara, eyeshadow, and blushes contain harmful chemicals.

Headache is the most common side effect of makeup for keeping them on for a long time. Tiredness, dizziness, and nausea are also found in some of the patients.

Fairness cream leads to permanent discolouration of the skin and also skin damage. Frequent exposure to nail paints lower the quality of your nails and also leads to fragile nails.

Frequent manicures and pedicures can also damage your nails. Cosmetics such as deodorant and antiperspirant lead to irritation, redness, and itching. They also block the sweat glands and can lead to contact dermatitis.

Waxing and shaving can cause infection and ingrown hairs. Waxing of your face can lead to early sagging of your face because of harsh pulling of your face.

Also, there is a common misconception that expensive products are not as harmful as cheaper options. While it can be true in a few cases, we should go for the products with lesser ingredients and should stay away from the word fragrance because fragrance alone contains many harmful ingredients.

We love to do makeovers that are not healthy for our skin. So, it is imperative that we follow what doctors and dermatologists suggest and be more careful in using makeup ingredients.
