Jahangirnagar Univ: A safe haven for guest birds

Winter is one of the most favourite seasons for most of the Bangladeshis as the weather during this time remains rather soothing. In this period, hundreds of thousands birds from Siberia, China, Himalayans, Mongolia, Xinxian, and other cold territories migrate to Bangladesh.

At the very outset of winter, the birds, in search of food and to escape the unbearable cold of the northern countries of the globe, flock to Bangladesh.

The Jahangirnagar University (JU) is recognised as the only residential university of Bangladesh which has a large number of lakes and bushes, and it provides a safe sanctuary for the guest birds.

Every year, a vast amount of passionate bird loving people gather at the university campus to watch the migratory birds chirping and fluttering near the lakes.

Migratory birds have already started coming at Jahangirnagar University lakes from the beginning of this November. Every year the JU lakes take a beautiful look with big and colourful water lilies and different types of migratory birds.

Around 15 species of migratory birds come to JU every year. Boro Sorali which is known as greater whistling ducks and Chhoto Sorali which is known as the lesser whistling ducks are found more in JU lakes than other species.
