Choosing everyday colours for your lips

Suitable lipsticks with the right glosses and stains are necessary for an attractive look. The type and colour of lipsticks vary according to skin tone, outfit, and occasion. Here are some simple guides to choosing everyday colours for your lips.

One or two shades deeper than your natural lip colour:

To test how close the shades are to your natural colour, apply the lipstick only to your lower lip and compare the shades with your upper lip. If the shades are drastically different, you need to keep looking.

Smaller or larger looks of lips:

Dark shades will make your lips look smaller, while lighter shades can add plumpness. Lipstick with a matte finish can also cause lips to look thinner, while glosses and shimmery shades can make them look fuller.

Undertone and complexion:

Remember that your undertone and complexion will help guide you, but they aren't the most crucial factors here. It is important to try on different shades and ultimately choose what you feel looks best.

Expert recommended shades:

If you have fair or light skin, you should try light pink, coral, peach, nudes, or beige. For cool undertones, try a soft mocha and nude. Try pale pink or nude with a little peach for warm undertones.

Try rose, mauve, or berry shades if you have medium skin. Shades of pink or cranberry will work fine for cool undertones. Experiment with copper or bronze for a warm undertone.

Avoid browns and purples for tan skin; go for colours with an orange undertone, coral, or deep pink.

Try browns or purples like walnut, caramel, plum, or wine if you have a deep complexion. Cool undertones should look for ruby and wine-coloured reds. Bronze will give warm undertones.

Keep it subtle:

Unless you feel like making a statement with bold lips, apply intense shades to your lower lip only. Press your lips together, then use your finger to even out the colour.

Matching a lip colour with the rest of your look:

Rule of thumb, don't match a lip colour too closely with your clothing. If you wear a fire-engine red dress, wearing the same colour on the lips will look overwhelming.

Nude lips look great with just about anything. It is a great casual look and can help play up dramatic eyes. Red can add drama to a fairly plain outfit. Try not to overwhelm yourself by wearing red with bright clothing or crazy patterns.

Pink is versatile because there are so many shades. Pink, just a few shades brighter than your natural lip colour, works for a subtle, everyday look.

Go for dramatic lips or eyes, not both. Stick to mascara on the eyes or a bit of dark brown eyeliner in between your lashes.
