Khaleda’s leave to appeal verdict Thursday

The Supreme Court has set Thursday to deliver its verdict on the leave to appeal filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia seeking stay of the proceedings in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

A five-member the Appellate Division bench led by acting Chief Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah fixed the date on Monday.

Earlier on October 30, the SC passed ‘no order’ on a petition filed by Khaleda and cleared way for the continuation of Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, prompting her to file the leave to appeal.

On October 22, the High Court disposed with observation the petition filed by her seeking its directive for recording deposition of nine witnesses of state.

It also rejected an appeal filed by Khaleda to re-examine two witnesses in the case. Later on October 24, she filed a petition with the Supreme Court challenging the HC order, reports UNB.

After a hearing, Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain sent the petition to the full bench of the apex court for its hearing.

The Anti Corruption Commission filed the case with Ramna police against Khaleda, her son Tarique Rahmand four others on July 3, 2008.

The graft case relates to misappropriating over Tk 21. 0 million (2.10 crore) that came as grants from a foreign bank for orphans.
