Zaman Tower fire doused

A fire that broke out at high-rise Zaman Tower at Purana Paltan area in Dhaka on Friday was doused after two and a half hours' effort.

The fire fighters doused the flames around 5:30pm that broke out at the 16-storey block around 3.00pm, reports bdnews24.com.

The fire is believed to have spread from the offices of National Credit Ratings Limited housed on the seventh floor of the building, said Fire Service Control Room official Ziaur Rahman.

Fourteen fire fighting units worked to put out the fire, he said, but could not confirm the origin of the fire and the extent of damage.

No casualties were reported.

The office of the Jatiya Oikya Front, the opposition alliance being led by Gono Forum chief Dr Kamal Hossain, is located on the second floor of the building.

It also houses the office of online news outlet sarabangla.net on the 15th floor.

A sarabangla.net journalist said that most of the floors were empty as it was the weekly holiday.

But eight got stranded in the news publisher’s office and four others on other floors, the journalist said.

The fire crew used ladders to rescue them, he added.
