'Zakat fund can cut poverty’

Zakat fund mobilisation through dedicated organisations could help a great deal to eradicate poverty and create new entrepreneurs in the country, speakers said at a programme on Thursday.

They also said proper use of the fund and its allocation among the right beneficiaries in a structured way can also help the country achieve its various socio-economic development goals.

They came up with the views at a seminar - 'Institutional Management of Zakat' - held on the first day of the two-day 10th Zakat Fair 2022, organised by the Centre for Zakat Management (CZM), a non-profit organisation, at a city hotel.

President of Institute of Hazrat Mohammad (SAW) Lt Gen (Retd) M Noor Uddin Khan attended the seminar as the chief guest, while CZM Chairman Niaz Rahim presided over the session. CZM Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mohammad Ayub Miah presented the keynote paper.

Islamic scholars Dr Mohammad Manzur-e-Elahi and Jubair Hasan, and professor of Orleans University, USA Kabir Hasan attended the seminar, while Executive Secretary of World Zakat and Waqf Forum Irfan Syauqi Beik spoke virtually.

In his speech, the CZM chairman said the non-profit organisation has long been mobilising fund for all categories of beneficiaries - as directed in Islam.

"Different schemes, undertaken by the CZM, help ensure flourishing human resources through skill development, education and health."

Sharing success stories of the CZM, Mr Rahim also said through its entrepreneurship development programme many beneficiaries have got rid of their poverty within three-five years of getting fund.

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islamic belief that compels a capable individual to disburse a fixed portion of his surplus wealth among designated beneficiaries in every lunar year.

According to the keynote presentation, there is a clear indication to mobilise the Zakat fund through an organisation, so that its best use can be ensured.

Zakat involves huge management issues, thus it needs institutionalisation of the process, it added.

The CZM mobilises the Zakat fund - given by different entities - through a complete organisational structure in the light of the Quran and Hadith as well as in compliance with the state rules and regulations.

The Zakat Fair comprises a set of discussion programmes and other activities to create awareness about Zakat among people. The fair is scheduled to hold a seminar and a roundtable related to Zakat today (Friday).
