Youth dies in Teknaf ‘gunfight’

A young man was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Hoaikang Doingakata area in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Md Rasel Mahmud, 36, son of Foyez Ahmed of Uttar Lakkhanghona in Narayanganj.

Police said Mahmud was accused in a drug-related case, reports UNB.

Pradeep Kumar Das, Teknaf Model Police Station's officer-in-charge, said, Rasel went to buy Yaba at the house of Amir Hamza, an accused in a drug case, in the area at 1:30am on Saturday.

On information, police went to the area and miscreants opened fire on them, triggering the gunfight.

Rasel was critically injured in the skirmish. Police took him to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex and later shifted him to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

The body was sent for autopsy, OC added.

Law enforcers recovered 5,000 yaba pills, five round short gun cartridges from the spot.
