Winners of National Environment Medal 2020 announced

Three individuals and three institutions have been selected for the ‘National Environment Medal 2020’ for their outstanding contribution to the development of environment in the country.

The nominations were finalised at a virtual meeting of the National Committee on Medal on Thursday. Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Md Shahab Uddin presided over the meeting.  Among others, Deputy Minister Begum Habibun Nahar, Secretary of the ministry Ziaul Hasan, were present.

Valerie Ann Taylor, founder of Centre for Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP), Savar, Concord Readymix and Concrete Products Limited and Concord Pre-Stressed Concrete and Block Plant have been nominated in the ‘Environmental Protection and Pollution Control’ category's individual and institutional level respectively.

In addition, the renowned climate change expert Salimul Haque and the Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO) have been nominated for the award from ‘Environmental Education and Publicity’ category as individual and institution.

Zahurul Karim and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have been nominated as individual and institution in ‘Environmental Research and Technology Innovation’ category.

Speaking at the meeting Mr Shahab Uddin said many individuals and organisations are doing commendable work for the welfare of environment including trees.

The minister also said they will try to increase the amount of reward in future to encourage these people who have been working silently.

Each awardee will be given money equivalent to two bhori gold (22 carat) and additional Tk 50,000 along with crest and certificate.
