Wife of Addl IGP dies of dengue in Dhaka

The wife of additional inspector general of police Shahabuddin Qureshi has died of Aedes mosquito-borne disease dengue at a hospital in Dhaka city.

Syeda Akter, 54, died at the Square Hospital around 11:30am, said police headquarters’ assistant inspector general (media) Sohel Rana on Sunday.

The same day, two more people died of the same disease in Khulna -- the first reported dengue-caused deaths in the district.

Until Saturday since January this year, the directorate general of health services recorded 18 deaths, but newspapers reported deaths of more than 50 people from the viral fever during the period.

In 24 hours until 8:00pm yesterday, 1,649 people were admitted to different hospitals with dengue fever across the country.

With the latest, the countrywide number of people affected with dengue stood at 22,919.

Of them, 16,043 dengue patients have returned home after treatment, while the rest 6,858 people are still hospitalised.

The dengue has spread to all 64 districts, including Dhaka, in the country, which experts say may affect the economy if unchecked.

Amid such outbreak, both mayors of Dhaka, the city which is at the centre of the dengue outbreak, are still divided over the Aedes mosquito insecticide and other issues related.
