Why no bail to Farmers Bank’s Babul Chishti: HC

The High Court has issued a rule asking the government to explain why former chairman of Farmers Bank's audit committee Mahbubul Haque Chishti, also known as Babul Chishti, should not be granted bail in a loan embezzlement case.

A two-member HC bench comprising of Md Shawkat Hossain and Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman passed the order, reports UNB.

The court also asked the concerned to respond to the rule within three weeks.

It also fixed June 11 for hearing on the bail petition of another accused in the case Ziauddin Ahmed, former senior vice president of the bank.

Barrister Moudud Ahmed appeared for the defendants along with Barrister Abdullah Al Mahmud, while Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.

Earlier on May 29, Senior Special Judge Kamrul Hossain Molla rejected the bail plea of Babul. Later, he filed a petition with the High Court against it.

Chishti and three others were arrested on April 10 in front of the NBR building in city's Segunbagicha. Earlier, the Anti Corruption Commission filed a loan embezzlement case with the Gulshan Police Station.

They were accused of embezzling Tk 160 crore using their influence in 25 bank accounts, alongside money laundering.

Earlier, ACC had imposed a travel ban on 17 people including several current and former top officials of the Farmers Bank Limited.
