Waterlogging due to heavy rainfall disrupts public life

Heavy rainfall caused waterlogging for several hours in some parts of the city on Saturday, disrupting public life.

People had to face difficulties in their movement in some areas including Moddho Badda and Adabor areas, according to the witnesses and residents.

Besides, some streets, lanes and by-lanes in the capital were seen under ankle to knee-deep water due to heavy rain, they pointed out.

Abul Kalam Mollik, a meteorologist at Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) told The Financial Express that they recorded 111 millimetres (mm) of rainfall in Dhaka between 6.00 am to 6.00 pm on Saturday while the highest 124 mm of rainfall was recorded in Sylhet.

According to meteorologists, 44 to 88 mm of rain is termed heavy rainfall; 11 to 22 mm of rainfall is considered moderate, while 23 to 43 mm of rainfall is termed moderately heavy.

The BMD in its 24-hour weather forecast said light to heavy rainfall may continue across the country including Dhaka on Sunday (tomorrow).

Rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Dhaka, Chattogram, Mymensingh & Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Khulna, Barishal, Rajshahi & Rangpur divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the country on Sunday(today), as per the met office forecast.

However, a mild heat wave is sweeping over Rajshahi & Khulna divisions and the regions of Faridpur, Gopalganj, Dinajpur & Nilphamari and it may abate from some places, as per the met office bulletin.

Day and night temperature may fall slightly over the country, it said.

In its 48-hour weather outlook said southwest monsoon may advance up to Teknaf Coast.

In August 2017, Dhaka recorded some 123 mm of rain in a day. Many roads in the capital were submerged during three hours of rain at that time. The city people saw such torrential rain in a short time after 10 years at that time.
