More than 100 thousand (one lakh) consumers in the port city's Bakolia area have been suffering from a severe water supply shortage for a week now.
The residents blamed the Chattogram WASA (CWASA) for its failure to supply adequate water to the neighbourhood.
In a statement, they said the CWASA had promised to ensure uninterrupted water supply days before the fasting month of Ramadan started.
The CWASA officials sat with the leaders of the ruling Awami League with Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin in the chair.
At the meeting, the CWASA gave assurance to supply adequate water to the residents.
It also opened control rooms to receive complaints from the consumers.
The statement said water supply had been scanty in Taher Colony, Gani Colony, Chand Miah Munshi Lane, Dewan Bazar Madina Masjid area and DC Road Badsha Miah Sawdagar Bari areas since Thursday last.
Local residents contacted the CWASA and ventilated their grievances over the issue.
The CWASA then asked them to contact its Reazuddin Bazar office.
When contacted, Engineer Shahidul Islam of Reazuddin Bazar office said water is supplied to West Bakolia DC Road and its adjacent areas from Bahaddarhat Project.
The residents are suffering as they are getting inadequate water from the project, he cited.
Kamal Ahmed from Badsha Miah Sawdagar Bari and Ershad Hossain Sadi from Madina Masjid areas said they are not getting water since Tuesday.
People having tubewells or deep tubewells or submersible pumps are getting water but this is unusable due to a high density of iron in it.
Most of the people in these underdeveloped areas buy jar water from the local market, they said.
Water is as much essential as electricity and gas, especially during Ramadan.
However, the sufferers do not know when water supply in their areas will be normal.
