Voting in Cumilla City Corporation (CCC) elections ended on Wednesday afternoon amid reports of technical faults in voting machines in a couple of centres and slow voting.
The voting started at 8 am and continued until 4 pm without any break, report BSS and bdnews24.com.
The voting was held with a satisfactory turnout at polling centres and without any complaint from the candidates in the election. A short spell of rain in the morning and EVM errors delayed voting at some polling stations.
The results of the election will be published at every polling centre after the end of counting.
The returning officer will announce the combined results from the control room and result distribution centre at the Shilpakala Academy in Cumilla later on Wednesday.
Three mayoral candidates cast their votes in their respective polling stations Cumilla City Corporation (CCC) election.
Awami League mayoral candidate Arfanul Haque Rifat and independent candidate Nizam Uddin Kaiser exercised their voting right at the Victoria College polling station in the city at 9 am. Independent candidate and former mayor Monirul Haque Sakku cast his vote at the same time at the polling station at Hochhamia High School in the city.
Adequate law enforcement personnel were deployed at each polling station so that the voters can come to the polling booths without any hindrance. Law enforcement continues to patrol the city's main thoroughfares.
Visiting the city's Modern High School at 10 am, voters were seen standing in line to cast their votes in a festive atmosphere.
Voter Abdul Samad said that the voting was held smoothly.
Hosneyara Begum, a woman voter at the centre, said, "I have come to cast my vote. I was able to vote without any hassle.”
Presiding Officer Abdul Baten said the atmosphere at the polling station was good and voters were standing in line to cast their votes. At the centre, more than 20 members of law enforcement are on duty. Besides police, BGB and RAB members were on duty.
According to UNB, the local administration sentenced ten people to different terms of imprisonment for their alleged bid to create chaos during the polls.
Deputy Commissioner Quamrul Hasan said Didar Hossain under no 23 ward was sentenced to seven-day jail, another in Cumilla Sadar Dakkhin Upazila got three-day jail, two people in No 3 ward three-day jail, three others under No 10 ward three-day jail, two people in Boropukur area 7-day jail and another at Hossamia Girl’s School 7-day jail.
"The punitive action was taken against them as they were involved in trying to make a chaotic situation during the election," said Quamrul.
