Different lower courts in virtual hearings across the country granted bail to 60,407 people in 45 working days from May 11 to July 16.

Md Saifur Rahman, special officer of High Court Division, confirmed this to the Financial Express (FE) on Sunday morning.

The courts also settled 120,904 bail petitions during the period under review.

The lower courts in virtual hearings granted bail to some 5,730 people in the five days to Thursday (July 5 to July 16).

As many as 13,867 bail pleas were settled during the period.

Apart from this, 698 children secured bail through different virtual courts across the country in the last 45 working days.

Of the children, 685 were handed over to their guardians.

The Supreme Court had suspended the operation of all courts as part of the government efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus since March 26.

However, the court proceedings began through videoconference on May 11 after President Abdul Hamid promulgated an ordinance on May 10 that allows all courts to conduct trial proceedings through videoconference and other digital means.
