Viqarunnisa teacher suspended over student's suicide

The authorities of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College have suspended morning shift in-charge of its Baiely Road branch Zinnat Ara amid public anger over the suicide of a student.

The teacher was suspended on Tuesday as part of an effort to ensure a proper investigation into the death of Aritree Adhikari, report UNB and bdnews24.com.

VNSC Governing Body president Golam Ashraf Talukder said, "A show-cause notice was issued against Zinnat Ara and she was asked to refrain from discharging her duties until the probe is completed over the suicide incident."

Besides, the Principal was asked to explain the matter, he said.

Aritree Adhikari, daughter of Dilip Adhikari, and a Class-IX student of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, reportedly committed suicide at their Shantinagar residence in the city on Monday after allegedly being rebuked by teachers for using mobile phone during examination.

Her relative Soumitra Sarker had said earlier that Aritree took her parents to the school on Monday, and the principal insulted them. Principal Nazneen denied the allegation.

Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Education and the Viqarunnisa authorities set up the panels with a three-day deadline to turn in probe reports.

The suicide sparked fury among students and guardians and turned the spotlight on the controversial handling of students by one of the top schools in Bangladesh.

The authorities also issued a show-cause notice to the teacher
