‘Using inappropriate words in statement over Barishal incident was mistake’

Khandker Anwarul Islam on Monday said the leaders of the Bangladesh Administrative Service Association (BASA) admitted that they made a mistake by using inappropriate words in their statement over a recent incident in Barishal.

After the weekly cabinet meeting on Monday, the cabinet secretary informed that secretaries and officials differed with the statement during a meeting on Sunday.

The administrative officials opined that such type of language should not have been used in the statement, the cabinet secretary said.

Anwarul Islam said, “Those who were from BASA also agreed with it (the opinion) and said it was actually a mistake.”

Replying to a query regarding the recent untoward situation in Barishal, the cabinet secretary said all parties -- field administration, law enforcement agencies and public representatives -- were asked to interact regularly to avoid miscommunication and untoward incidents.

Mentioning that embarrassing incidents mostly happen due to miscommunication, he said, “This is why, instruction was given to all of the field levels, including administration, law enforcement agencies and public representatives to interact among them regularly.”

He continued saying, miscommunication and untoward incidents occurred due to a lack of proper interaction.

The directive was issued from the LGRD ministry and the cabinet division, he said

On Wednesday night, a clash broke out between the supporters of the Awami League and members of Ansar near the residence of the UNO of Barishal Sadar Upazila surrounding the removal of a banner from Barishal Sadar Upazila Parishad.

The Bangladesh Administrative Service Association issued a statement on Thursday demanding arrest of Barishal City Corporation Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah.

In the statement, the association had alleged that ‘political miscreants’ attacked the official residence of the Barishal Sadar Upazila nirbahi officer and said the city mayor was responsible for the attack.
