USA promises continued Rohingya support  

The United States has assured Bangladesh of continuing its political and humanitarian support to help the hosts address the ongoing Rohingya crisis.

Deputy Assistant to the US President and Senior Director for South and Central Asia at the National Security Council Lisa Curtis made the assurance during a meeting with Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque at the White House in Washington DC.

Curtis also conveyed President Donald Trump's deep appreciation for Bangladesh to Shahidul Haque for providing shelter to more than a million Rohingyas.

Curtis elaborated on some aspects of the US Administration's Indo-Pacific Strategy.

During the meeting on Friday, they discussed bilateral, regional and global security issues, said the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington on Sunday.

Foreign Secretary Haque also met Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the South and Central Asian Affairs Bureau at the US Department of State Ambassador Alice Wells.

Ambassador Wells said that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is seized with the issue and commended Bangladesh's extremely generous attitude and efforts to shelter such a huge number of persecuted Rohingyas from Myanmar.

They discussed various aspects of the growing partnership between the two countries.

Foreign Secretary Haque's also held meeting with Acting Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration at the US Department of State Ambassador Mark Storella, reports UNB.

Mr Haque conveyed the Bangladesh government's sincere thanks to the US government for its support to address the Rohingya crisis. Ambassador Storella hugely praised Bangladesh's humane approach, despite its own resource constrains,

for sheltering more than one million Rohingyas.
