USA announces $18.4m fresh fund  for Rohingya food assistance   

The United States on Thursday announced US$ 18.4 million emergency food assistance for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar.

According to the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the latest contribution through USAID to World Food Programme brings total amount awarded for refugees in Bangladesh to more than $24 million since August last year.

According to a USAID press release, total US government humanitarian assistance for all entities working with displaced people in and from Myanmar in the region is more than $177 million since October 2016.

Food insecurity and malnutrition remain serious concerns in Cox’s Bazar, it said, adding, more than 62,800 children under five years are in need of treatment for acute malnutrition while 120,000 pregnant and lactating women need nutrition assistance.

USAID’s contribution to the WFP funds emergency food and nutrition assistance for refugees, especially for pregnant and lactating women and children under five, and provides logistic support.

USAID-funded distribution of rice, peas, vegetable oil and super cereals also help prevent and treat malnutrition and child mortality.
