US envoy for mounting pressure on Myanmar to ensure Rohingya repatriation

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller on Tuesday said the international pressure should be mounted on Myanmar government for the safe repatriation of Rohingyas.

The US envoy made the remarks while talking to journalists after visiting the historic 85-old Keane Bridge on the Surma River in Sylhet.

Asked about the US position on the Rohingya issue, Miller said they (US) are always beside Bangladesh and would continue to put pressure on Myanmar to create atmosphere for the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return of them (all Rohingyas) to their motherland Rakhine State.

He said Bangladesh has opened its heart as well as border to give shelter over a million people who have been persecuted at their motherland.

The international community highly appreciated Bangladesh’s generosity for proving shelter to Rohingyas. The ambassador said Bangladesh has been hosting Myanmar nationals and most of them entered the here since August 25, 2017.

He categorically said the US wants to work as a close associate of Bangladesh over Rohingya issue and they will remain with Dhaka for the safe and dignified repatriation of Rohingya people to their motherland from where they were forcibly displaced.

Officer Bidayok Roy Chowdhury and Chief Engineer Noor Azizrulr Rahman, among others, were also present there, reports BSS.
