The US embassy in Dhaka has issued a security alert for its citizens living in Bangladesh as about 10,000 migrant workers were demonstrating in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area on Sunday.

The embassy in a message published on its website on Sunday said it is aware of the gathering outside the Pan Pacific Shonargaon Hotel which houses the Saudi Arabian Airlines office.

“A crowd has also gathered at the Biman Bangladesh Airlines Office in Motijheel. We anticipate the groups will continue to gather for an undetermined period of time demanding return flights to Saudi Arabia,” it said.

The embassy also urged its citizens to avoid these areas.

The US Embassy, however, remains open for businesses.

“Practice sound personal security measures by remaining alert, being aware of your surroundings, and avoiding large gatherings. Avoid protests, demonstrations, and/or rallies. Always carry your cell phones with you” the embassy added as a security guidance reminder for its citizens.
