Plane crash survivor Kabir to be taken to Singapore for treatment

US-Bangla plane crash survivor Kabir Hossain, who is now on life support at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), will be taken to Singapore.

A 17-member board of doctors made the decision on Saturday morning, said Dr Hossain Imam, resident surgeon of Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit.

“The board decided that Kabir’s right leg may need to be amputated,” board member Dr Imam said. “We took our recommendation to the family who requested that he be transferred to Singapore.”

Kabir lived with his wife, two sons and daughter in Dhaka’s Uttarkhan.

The cosmetic materials importer regularly flew outside the country on work, his family said.

US-Bangla Airlines authorities have been contacted regarding his transfer to Singapore, Dr Imam said. “US-Bangla will arrange an air ambulance to transfer Kabir to Singapore as soon as possible.”

Kabir’s condition, including that of his right leg, was perilous. It has slowly deteriorated since the crash. We did not want to take any further risks so we placed him on life support [in the wee hours of Saturday].”

Earlier on Monday, Kabir was brought back home from Nepal and admitted to the DMCH.

According to bdnews24, Kabir and nine other wounded Bangladeshi nationals had been rescued and taken to Kathmandu hospitals after a US-Bangla Airlines flight crashed on Mar 12.

He was brought to Bangladesh last Monday and admitted to the Dhaka Medical Burn Unit.

Doctors had said Kabir had broken both legs at various places, with the leg suffering more damage.

Two other victims wounded in the crash were sent directly from Nepal to Singapore. Another survivor was sent to India. The rest are currently undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical Burn Unit.

A total of 49 people were killed in the crash, 26 of whom were Bangladeshi nationals.
