UPDF blockade underway in Khagrachhari

A dawn-to-dusk road blockade is underway in the district on Sunday protesting the murder of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) organiser Mithun Chakma and the obstruction to hold his funereal ceremony.

Almost all types of vehicles remained out of roads on long and domestic routes since the morning, causing untold sufferings to passengers especially tourists.

Picketers blocked roads at different places but no untoward incident was reported, said officer-in-charge of Khagrachhari Police Station Tareque Mohammad Abdul Hannan.

Additional police have remained deployed at different strategic points to avert any untoward incident.

On Saturday, the blockade called by UPDF and its like-minded indigenous organisations protesting the killing of its organiser Mithun Chakma passed off peacefully barring some stray incidents of violence in the district, reports UNB.

Police chased picketers in Chengi Bridge area of the district town and dispersed them by firing blank shots.

Later, UPDF called the blockade for Sunday, the second consecutive day, protesting the police obstruction.

On January 3, Mithun was shot to death by miscreants at Pankhaiyapara in Sadar upazila.
