UNICEF has underscored the need for Bangladesh to maintain the child immunisation trend amid the surge of Covid-19 cases.

Despite initial disruptions during the first months of the pandemic, the country restored routine immunisation services to pre-Covid-19 levels in June 2020, the UN agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

From December 2020 to January 2021, it also conducted a mass immunisation campaign for measles and rubella, reaching 36 million children, it said.

“Now with the third and to date largest spike of Covid-19 in Bangladesh, working towards maintaining this positive child immunisation trend will be key,” UNICEF insisted.

As the World Immunization Week, starting on Saturday, continues, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and Gavi and the Vaccine Alliance on Monday called for a global commitment to improve vaccination services disrupted by the pandemic.

They warned that with the pandemic disrupting the vaccination services, millions of children have been vulnerable to deadly diseases.
