Ulpur village, just eight kilometres from the district headquarters of Gopalganj, is home to the Ulpur Zamindar House, a symbol of aristocracy from ancient Bengal. The zamindar house is one of the landmarks of the region.
According to history, the zamindars of Ulpur shared one hundred houses. In the 1900s, Zamindar Pritish Chandra Roy Chowdhury built a house on 200 acres of land in Ulpur. Although the zamindari system was abolished, the buildings built by the zamindars have survived to become historical monuments.
After the partition of Bengal in 1947, Zamindar Pritish Roy moved to Calcutta. The government took the house in khas khatian.
The craftsmanship of the Ulpur zamindar house is exquisite. But river erosion and lack of maintenance are destroying its buildings. Most of the structures of Ulpur zamindar house are on the verge of destruction today. Some of its buildings are occupied by influential people.
Surrounded by natural beauty, the house has several buildings and a large pond. The Bilrut Canal of the Madhumati River flows adjacent to the house.
Gopalganj Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sadiqur Rahman Khan said the historic building would be preserved to relay history to future generations. The Archaeological Conservation Department has been informed to this effect.
Ulpur village has a number of historic buildings, including eight two-storey buildings used for zamindari purposes. These buildings are currently being used as Ulpur Tehsil Office, Sub-Post Office, Old Union Board Office, health centre and madrasa.
