UGC decides to tag universities with red stars for enrolling additional students

The University Grant Commission (UGC) has decided to tag red stars if any private university is found to be enrolling students above the approved number of seats.

The same red star mark will be applied and necessary actions will be taken if the private universities run programmes and courses without the UGC’s approval, said the UGC in a new decision on Monday.

Meanwhile, a committee has been formed to investigate the admission of additional students to European University Bangladesh.

The commission has advised students not to take admission to a private university with a red star.

Universities will also be tagged with red stars for conducting educational activities in buildings and campuses without the UGC’s approval, absence of vice-chancellor and treasurer appointed by the chancellor for more than six months, and other irregularities related to ownership disputes of board members, it added.

The decision was taken recently at a coordination meeting of the Department of Private Universities.

UGC member Professor Biswajit Chand chaired the meeting.

Prof Chand said there is no room for enrolling students outside the approved seats. If any university did so, then it would not be legal by any measure, adding the validity of the certificates of these additional students will be questioned.

“Some private universities admit additional students to illegally earn money by ‘selling certificates’,” he said.

The new decision came following a media report which disclosed the European University Bangladesh enrolled 900 students against the approved 40 seats.
