Two to walk gallows for killing RU teacher

A Rajshahi tribunal has sentenced two JMB militants to death and three others to life term imprisonment for killing Rajshahi University (RU) teacher Prof Rezaul Karim Siddiquee in 2016.

After examining records and witnesses, Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Shirin Kabita Akhter handed down the verdict in presence of the three convicts on the doc on Tuesday.

The condemned convicts are-Shariful Islam, a student of English Department of the university, and Maskawat Hossain Sakib alias Abdullah, hailing from Bogura. Shariful tried in absentia.

The lifers are- Rahmatullah, a student of RU, Abdus Sattar and his son Ripon Ali of Poba upazila, reports UNB.

According to the prosecution, on November 8, 2016, police pressed charges against eight members of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in the case more than six months after the killing.

Of them, Badal, Nazrul and Osman were killed in gunfights with police at different times and Shariful has been on the run.

Prof Rezaul Karim, 58, of RU English Department, was killed by miscreants in the city's Shalbagan area while he was waiting for university bus on April 23, 2011.

The victim's son Sourov Hossain filed a murder case with Boalia police station.
