Two tannery workers die inhaling toxic gas in Savar

Two tannery workers have died after inhaling toxic gas at a tannery unit of Savar Tannery Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Mahbubur Rahman; 50, and Hasan Ali; 24, reports UNB.

Police said the three workers of Prince Leather Industries fell sick inhaling toxic gas as soon as they opened the slid of a chemical drum around 3pm.

Among the three, Hasan died on the way to hospital while Mahbub was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital.

Another worker, 18-year-old Moazzem, was admitted to DMCH and was taken at intensive care unit.

Sources said, Moazzem had tried to rescue the Mahbub and Hasan. But he fell sick too.

Workers at the factory requesting anonymity said the three victims fell sick after inhaling poisonous chemical used in pickling hides.

Golam Nabi, in charge of the local police camp, said Hasan died in the factory and he took Mahbub and Moazzem to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia at DMCH police camp said the doctors pronounced Mahbub dead and Moazzem was admitted to the hospital.
