Two suspects of UNO Wahida attack arrested

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police in a joint drive arrested two men, including a local Jubo League leader, in connection with the attack on Ghoraghat UNO Wahida Khanam on Friday.

The suspects were identified as Jahangir Hossain, from the upazila's Osmanpur, and Asadul Islam, from Raniganj, reports bdnews24.com.

Jahangir is the convener of the Jubo League's Ghoraghat Upazila unit, Shahidul Islam Akash, general secretary of Ghoraghat Krishak League, said.

They were arrested from Kaliganj area in Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur district early Friday, according to Ghoraghat Police OC Amirul Islam.

The two have been taken to the RAB-13 office in Rangpur, said OC Amirul.

"We were able to identify and arrest them after reviewing footage from the security camera at the UNO's residence."

According to law enforcement, they both are drug users and have been implicated in a few cases with police.

"Jahangir had been charged with attacking the Ghoraghat municipal mayor in a case. He had been arrested over the matter but was later released on bail," Birampur Circle's ASP Mithun Sarker said.

But it is not clear why they broke into the UNO's home and attacked them, he added.

Wahida Khanam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Ghoraghat, was seriously injured in an attack by miscreants at her home on the Upazila Parishad premises early Thursday, reports UNB.

Her father was also injured in the gruesome attack. They were taken to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital.

Later, the UNO was airlifted from Rangpur to Dhaka by a Bangladesh Air Force MI-171SH helicopter.

She was admitted to the National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital, Dhaka.

UNO Wahida's condition is now stable, said Dr Badrul Alam, joint director of the hospital.

“Her condition is stable after doctors conducted a surgery from 9:30 pm to 11:00 pm on Thursday. She’s undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU),” Dr Badrul Alam said.

“Doctors at the ICU have informed me she (Wahida) is stable now and today they’ll conduct some tests,” he said while talking to UNB over phone.
