The bid of a good Samaritan to save a man went in vain as both were crushed to death by a train at Belpukur level crossing in Puthia upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Korban Ali Mondal, 75, of Belpukur village, and Shamsul Alam, 65, of Tatalpur village in the upazila.
Korban tried to cross the rail tracks incautiously around 4:00pm when a speedy train was approaching him. Sensing impending danger, Shamsul rushed in to save him, said Kabirul Islam, Inspector (Investigation) of Belpukur Police Station, according to a UNB report.
However, both of them were crushed under the wheels of the train, leaving them dead on the spot, he said.
The bodies were sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Officer-in-charge of Rajshahi Railway Police Station Sayeed Iqbal said a case was filed over the accident.
