Two die in Joypurhat AL clash

A clash between two rival sides of the Awami League has left at least two of the party activists dead and 30 others injured in Joypurhat’s Kalai upazila.

The incident took place at the upazila’s Muslimganj Bazar on Saturday night, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Aftab Sarkar, 50, son of later Saddar Sarkar from Pranath Union’s Mollaparah, and Ratan, 45, son of late Charu Mohonto, from the upazila’s Mohishyaparah.

According to locals, there was a longstanding dispute between newly elected Kalai Upazila Parishad Chairman Minfuzur Rahman and the same upazila’s Udoypur Union Parishad Chairman Wazed Ali.

The dispute flared up last night only to lead to the deadly clash.

The clash left 32 people injured.

Of them, with critical wounds, Aftab died while under treatment at Bogra’s Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital and Ratan succumbed to injuries on the way.

Both the deceased are supporters of the newly elected upazila chairman.

Kalai Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Abdul Latif Khan said the injured were secretly taking treatment at various hospitals.

Police have been deployed in the area. The situation is now under control, he said.
