Two die as they stay at home 'ignoring cyclone warning' in Barguna

Two people have died as they, reportedly refusing to go to a cyclone shelter, stayed in their house in Barguna in the early hours of Saturday.

They were Nur Jahan, 50, and her grandson Zahidul, 16, at Charduani village in Patharghata upazila of Barguna, said Hanif Sikder, officer-in-charge at the Patharghata Police Station.

These two deaths are among at least five the country has witnessed during a cyclone Fani-caused storm on Saturday.

Shamsuddin Ahmed, director of the Meteorological Department, briefed the media at his office in Dhaka's Agargaon at 10:00 am.

”I hear that an elderly woman and her grandson were staying at their home refusing to go to a cyclone shelter only to die after their house roof collapsed.

"Had they gone to a cyclone shelter, their deaths could have been avoided. That means, carelessness could lead to such consequence."

At least 12 people have died as a result of storms caused by cyclone Fani that moved over Bangladesh this morning after leaving a trail of deadly destruction in India on Friday, local media reported.

Weakened into a cyclonic storm from a very severe cyclonic one, it was located over Dhaka-Faridpur region at 9:00am, a Met Office bulletin said.

The storm is likely to leave Bangladesh by this afternoon, or 4:00pm, according to the Met office.

Though the very severe cyclonic storm entered the country, weakening into an ordinary one, he suggested staying at the cyclone shelters until it turns into a depression.

At the latest, according to the Met office, the cyclone over Faridpur-Dhaka region has weakened into a land depression, prompting the authorities to lower warnings for maritime ports in the country.
