Two cops arrested for looting Tk 0.28m from civilian

Two policemen posted at the Sitakunda Police Station have been arrested and later suspended for mugging a man in the area.

A case was filed on Thursday night at Sitakunda Police Station against Sub-Inspector Saiful Alam, 32, Constable Saiful Islam, 27, and police informers Ripon, 35, Harun, 33, and car driver Raju, 25.

Alam and Islam have been arrested and produced before the court, said Chattogram's Additional Superintendent of Police (Sitakunda Circle) Md Ashraful Karim. "They have been suspended," he added.

According to case details, plaintiff Md Abu Zafar, 43, came to Sitakunda on Dec 24 to purchase a pickup van but the deal did not go as planned, reports UNB.

In the evening, as he was waiting for a bus at the Shyamoli counter in Sitakunda municipality bus terminal to return home, two men sat beside him and asked him why he had come to Chattogram.

A few minutes later, ASI Alam and Constable Islam joined them and identified themselves as members of the Detective Branch (DB). They picked up the victim falsely claiming that he was smuggling contraband yaba pills in his stomach and had an x-ray done at the general hospital.

Instead of releasing him, they took him to a number of places and looted the Tk 280,000 Zafar was carrying on him (for the pickup van). The muggers in uniform then threatened the victim and put him on a bus to Dhaka.

Zafar however managed to return to Sitakunda Police Station later and informed the authorities concerned about his ordeal before filing the case.
