Two bodies formed to curb road accidents

Two committees were formed to submit reports with recommendations for averting road accidents and implementing the Road Transport Act (RTA).

The bodies – one is comprised of three members with ministers of home, law and railways ministries while the other committee on road transport discipline and accident control with 15 members will be headed by former shipping minister Shahjahan Khan.

“Both the committees will submit their reports within 14 working days with the recommendations to ensure discipline in the streets,’ said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader while briefing reporters after the 26th meeting of national road safety council at BRTA auditorium in the city on Sunday.

The apex body comprising members of both government, transport sector representatives and civil society sat after one and a half years amid the growing number of road accidents throughout the country. The last meeting was held in November 2017.

Ministers, state ministers, secretaries of different ministries, including home, rail and shipping and heads of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Highway Police, roads and highways department, BRTA, DNCC, DSCC and DTCA, attended the 26th meeting.

The meeting also decided to conduct driving training at youth development centres in all 64 districts to meet the gap of drivers needs. It is also decided to hold traffic week every month instead of a year to work on creating awareness among street users.

Obaidul Quader admitted that road accident has become a major concern of the present time as it turned fatal.
