Two arrested at Dhaka airport with Tk 14m worth foreign currency

Armed Police arrested two departing passengers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka on Friday while allegedly trying to smuggle out Saudi Riyal.

They tried to go to Bahrain with Saudi Riyal equivalent to Tk 14 million Bangladeshi currency, confirmed additional superintendent of Airport Armed Police Mohammad Ziaul Haque.

The arrestees are Jewel, 38, of Brahmanbaria, and Golam Rabbani, 48, of Cumilla, reports UNB.

It was learnt that the two were trying to reach Bahrain on a Gulf Air flight at 5.40 am this morning. From there they would go to Dubai. Armed Police arrested them from the holding lounge of the airport. At that time, 0.60 million Saudi Riyals were recovered from their luggage which is equivalent to almost Tk 14.0 million.

Ziaul Haque said they kept watch on the two men on intelligence information. During primary interrogation after the arrest, they admitted that they were trying to smuggle the Riyals to Dubai.

The two men travel to Dubai every week, added the Ziaul.
