Trial begins against Evaly’s Rassel, Shamima in money embezzlement case

A Dhaka Court on Wednesday framed a charge against controversial e-commerce platform Evaly’s former chairman Shamima Narsin and its former managing director and CEO Mohammad Russel in a case filed on charge of embezzling customer’s money with the Gulshan Police Station in Dhaka.

A judge of the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka, Mehedi Hasan, passed the order after hearing the parties.

The court at the same time fixed February 18 in 2023 for recording witness testimonies. It also acquitted Mainul Haque, another accused of the case, said lawyer Ahsan Habib who appeared in the hearing on behalf of the Evaly’s officials.

Accused Russel was produced in the court, while Shamima, who is on bail, did not appear before it and applied for a time through her lawyer. However, the court rejected the time plea and issued an arrest warrant for her.

Arif Baker, a customer on September 16 in 2021 filed a case with the Gulshan Police Station accusing the trio of embezzling Tk 0.31 million.

According to the case statement, Arif had ordered goods worth Tk 0.31 million from Evaly in May and June after seeing attractive offers on its website on May 29. But he did not get the products within the stipulated time.

The company was committed to refunding the paid amount if the goods were not delivered within seven to 45 working days, said Arif.

As the products were not delivered, Arif called Evaly's customer care several times and on September 5, for the last time, but no solution was given, he added.

After investigating the case, the police on August 29 this year pressed charges against the three Evaly officials.
