The government and private offices as well as the commercial establishments, including markets and malls are already reopened in Sylhet region while health related restrictions had been eased for days.

Mass transports and the public places like markets and offices almost got back their previous face.

But the public transports, especially bus, minibus and auto rickshaws were still realising extra fares from passengers violating the government order for keeping half of the seats vacant due to COVID -19 pandemic.

The passengers' suffering and risks go high as the transport workers realise 60 per cent extra with the previous fare for no benefit.

Often the passengers are harassed for making protests against the additional fare while the seats are not kept free in line with the government instruction in hygienic condition.

Meanwhile, in the face of demands from the common passengers, the Sylhet Zila Paribahan Malik Samity has asked for reducing the transport fares.

Its president Abul Kalam said we have already asked the transport workers union for restoring the previous fares. However, they could realise 60 per cent extra ensuring 02 seats for one passenger, he added.

Acting president of the Sylhet Zila Bus, minibus Sramik Union Runu Mia said the government should give clear instructions over the fare.

All modes of transports were suspended by the government from March 26 amid a Pandemic situation.

However, limited movement of transports were allowed from May 31 with a provision of 02 seats for one passenger with 60 per cent extra fare.

A number of passengers alleged the transport workers realise extra fare but no space is kept free.

The government either should ensure spacing on buses and auto rickshaws or cancel the increased fare, said trader Anwar Hossain of the Sylhet city's Bandarbazar area yesterday.

Often quarrel takes place between the transport workers and the common passengers while there is none to see the mismanagement of transports, he added.
