Transport owners demand bus services be resumed amid lockdown

The transport owners' association urged the government to resume bus services during the ongoing lockdown.

Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity (Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association) in a statement on Friday also called upon the government to provide food assistance to the unemployed transport workers.

Millions of workers are unemployed and many transport owners are unable to pay loan instalments, the association's President Moshiur Rahman Ranga and Secretary General Khondaker Enayet Ullah said in the statement.

“Everything is going on normally amid the lockdown except bus services .”

As buses are not operating, passengers are being carried by CNG-run autorickshaws, three-wheelers, microbuses, staff buses and even ambulances without following health guidelines, they added.

“If the bus services resume at half capacity complying with health rules, there would be no possibility of spreading coronavirus."

Transport owners and workers across the country are dismayed over stalled bus services, they said.
