Ministers, business bodies express deep shock

Eminent businessman and Transcom Group Chairman Latifur Rahman passed away (inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un). He was 75.

Mr Rahman breathed his last at his own residence in Cumilla’s Chauddagram Upazila at 11:30 am today (Wednesday), Prothom Alo reported citing his family sources.

Latifur Rahman is survived by his wife, son, two daughters, relatives and a host of admirers.

Latifur Rahman was the founding director of Mediaworld and chairman of Mediastar.

He was laid to rest at the Banani graveyard in the city at 10 pm after a namaz-e-janaza at Azad Mosque in Gulshan.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Planning Minister MA Mannan, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud and State Minister for Information Dr Md Murad Hassan expressed shock at the death of the country's iconic businessman.

FBCCI, DCCI and other business organisations also condoled the death of Latifur Rahman.

They prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

He was a member of the executive board of ICC-Paris, vice president of ICC-Bangladesh and member of Brac's governing body.

Latifur Rahman was also president of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka for seven terms and of Bangladesh Employers' Federation.

Born on August 28, 1945, Rahman started his career in 1966 in his family-owned jute mills in Chandpur. Later, he established Transcom Group in 1973. In the 1980s, Rahman became the sole importer and distributor of Nestlé products in Bangladesh. In the 1990s, he bought Smith, Kline & French, a US-based pharmaceutical, later known as Eskayef.
