A commuter train derailed in Tongi area on Sunday, leaving four passengers dead and cutting off Dhaka's rail communications with some areas of the country.
Sub-Inspector of Joydepur Railway police outpost Md Raqibul Islam said the Dhaka-bound commuter train from Jamalpur was derailed at Notunbazar area of Tongi around 12:15pm on Sunday.
Kamlapur Railway Police Station OC Md Yaseen said three passengers died on the spot and several others were injured.
Seven injured passengers were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where Md Shahadat, 38, was announced dead, said DMCH Medical Outpost ASI Babul Mia.
The details about three, who died on the spot, could not be known immediately.
According to bdnews24.com, the six others admitted to the hospital are Badol, 28, Shobuj, 40, Israfil, 12, Alamgir, 32, Badol, 50, and Md Sharif, 28.
Joydepur Railway outpost SI Md Raqibul Islam said the last four carriages of the train derailed and were dragged along for some time due to the speed of the train, he said.
"Two of the carriages overturned onto another rail line," he added.
The fire service recovered the three bodies and have handed them over to police.
The derailment caused immense sufferings to passengers as a number of trains on different routes got stranded at different stations.
The line was closed after the accident, cutting off rail service from Dhaka to Chattogram, Sylhet, Mymensingh and via the Bangabandhu Bridge to the north and south, Kamlapur Railway Police OC Md Yaseen said.
Meanwhile, Railways Minister Mujibul Haque visited the spot after the accident.
According to UNB, he told reporters after visiting the spot that the family of the each deceased will be given compensation.
The government will ensure proper treatment of the injured, he said.
The minister also said that the rail rink would be restored in an hour.
Bangladesh Railway authority formed a three-member committee to probe the train derailment.
Director General of Bangladesh Railway Amzad Hossain said the probe committee, headed by Chandan Kanti Dey, Chief Signal Telecom of Bangladesh Railway, will submit their report within three days.
The other members of the committee are Ariful Islam, (East) Chief engineer, Mizanur Rahman, Chief Technical engineer.
