Traditional 'Jabbar-er Boli Khela' Wednesday

The century-old traditional 'Jabbar-er Boli Khela' will be held on Wednesday at Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram.

All preparations have already been completed for smoothly holding the 109th edition of the traditional wrestling competition, said 'Jabbarer Boli Khela O Baishakhi Mela Udjapan Parishad' President Jahar Lal Hazari.

Committee Secretary Shawkat Anwar Badal said a huge number of law enforcers, including members of Rapid Action Battalion and Detective Branch, will be deployed to ensure security during the wresting.

Some 70-80 players have registered for taking part in the wresting competition till Tuesday with the organisers hoping participation of 100.

Didar Boli, hailing from Ramu in Cox's Bazar, clinched the title of the 108th 'Jabbar-er Boli Khela' last year and he participated in the Boli Khela for 15 times and took the championship for 13 times.

The 'Boli Khela was introduced in the early 20th century by Abdul Jabbar Saodagar. His desire was to cultivate a sport that would prepare youths to fight against the British rule which is a self-defence without weapons. It started in 1909. The traditional wrestling was named after the name of Jabbar, reports UNB.

Meanwhile, a three-day Baishakhi fair began on Monday in and around the Laldighi Maidan on the occasion of the 'Boli Khela'.
