Trade licence of contractors may be revoked over violations of building code: Atiqul

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam has said that all responsible institutions should ensure that the necessary safety measures are adhered to in the construction of any building. In case of faulty structures are found to violate the building code, their trade license can then be revoked.

“The trade license of the contractor firms will be revoked in case of violation of building code,” the Dhaka North mayor said while speaking at a workshop on ‘Disaster Management Exercise’ held at the Bangladesh University of Professionals on Wednesday, reports UNB.

According to the Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC), it is compulsory to take clearance certificates from the Fire Service, Department of Environment (DoE), Gas and Power divisions while fire detectors, smoke detectors, high-speed water spray systems and emission passage for carbon dioxide, are some of the mandatory features and processes expected of any high rise building, he said.

Atiqul regretted the authorities concerned did not pay any heed to maintain these codes, which invites accidents, he added.
